over and over again

While having a conversation with Andrew over g-chat I realized the wonderfulness of being able to fall in love with someone over and over again. Though we have been together for 6 and a half years, we continue finding new things about each other and falling in love.

The thing that did it for me this time was witnessing (sort of) Andrew "smithing." While filling out an application for a promotion at work, he was answering questions and using his wordsmith abilities to create some killer answers. For those that know us, I am the writer and he is the scientist which is one reason we work so well. Meaning no offense to my brilliant husband-to-be, it takes him almost double the time to compose a well-worded paragraph than me. But when he does write, it is always fantastic.

So while talking with him and having some witty banter, I realized how much I was flirting with him. I love it when we both start acting like we did when we first met and then realize it later. Relationships always go through hills and valleys. Sometimes the hills last a long time and other times the valleys can become the Grand Canyon. No matter how great the good times are or how disheartening the bad, we always return to that middle ground.

The best times are when everything is going like normal, nothing spectacular and nothing difficult, and then in a moment, I am reminded of the reason I fell head-over-heels for him so long ago. His wit, charm, intelligence and desire to continually improve himself get me every time. So, here we go, falling in love over and over again...

Procrastination

I thought about writing this blog 2 weeks ago but kept putting it off again and again. Not really, but procrastination is something we all do. We want, even need to do some things and just put them off until the very last minute or until we just can't stand it anymore.

This is not normally something I deal with because I am that person that does something as soon as it comes up and I don't put anything off. Yes, I pay bills as soon as they come in the mail. Yes, I complete assignments weeks before they are due. There are certain things, though, that I put off until I just can't stand the thought of it looming over my head anymore. Today, for instance, I spent 4 hours transcribing two interviews and I should have done it two months ago. Before I started, at the beginning and throughout the 4 hours, I was dreading it, hating it, kicking myself for having decided to do it today. Yet amazingly, once it was done, I was soooo relieved!

One more thing off of my plate. One less thing to worry about so that I can focus on planning our wedding, getting the most out of my internship, the next year of school, finding money to pay off the $1400 I had to pay in car repairs, doing everything else I need to do to finish my thesis and where/how Andrew and I will start our lives as a married couple.

Though there is still a lot on my plate, the load I took off that plate today was great. I knew from the very beginning that getting the transcription done would be a relief, so why didn't I just do it 2 months ago? If I knew that it would help me, why did I put it off for so long? Did I do it to maximize the sense of accomplishment once I finished? Or did I do it because I am lazy?

Why do any of us procrastinate the way we do? I know some people who are habitual procrastinators! What is the point? Why do we enjoy putting a load on our shoulders just so that we can stress about it until the very last minute...until we have no other choice?

I guess I am allowed to procrastinate on some things when I do everything else on or before time. Maybe this experience will teach me not to put anything off until the last minute. Maybe (probably) not. Oh well, I'll put off thinking about it until next time...
